Gulf Railway Project Reaches Halfway Mark, Full Launch Expected by 2030
RIYADH — The Gulf Railway project, a 1,700‑km rail network connecting all six Gulf Cooperation Council countries, is now 50% complete and scheduled to be fully operational by December 2030, according to Mohammad Al‑Shabrami, director general of the GCC Railways Authority.
Speaking to Al‑Eqtisadiah, Al‑Shabrami said the project is “one of the most prominent joint infrastructure projects” among member states, aimed at enhancing economic integration, strengthening supply chains, and creating new jobs.
The railway will integrate with air, land, and sea transport, reducing reliance on trucks and lowering emissions. By 2030, passenger traffic is expected to reach 6 million, rising to 8 million by 2045. Freight is projected to grow from 200 million tonnes in 2030 to 271 million tonnes in 2045.
The initiative reflects GCC countries’ commitment to a strategic asset that will boost the region’s global economic standing.
