Qatar Energy’s LNG Project aims for Production in early 2027 with $3bn in Financing
Qatar Energy’s first production unit at its North Field East liquefied natural gas (LNG) project is on track to be ready to start up in November, Reuters reported on Wednesday.
LNG production is planned to start in the first quarter of 2027, two sources familiar with the preparations told the agency.
Qatar Energy’s chief executive and Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said last month the first unit was expected to start up in the first half of 2027. He warned that any impediment to shipping across the Strait of Hormuz could delay supply of equipment for later units.
North Field East has four major production trains, each capable of producing roughly 8 million tones of LNG a year. The project is set to increase Qatar’s export capacity from 77 million to 110 million tones per year.
Repairs to the damaged units might take three years whereas undamaged facilities could resume to normal operations within weeks of Hormuz reopening, Al-Kaabi said last month.
Bloomberg also reported Wednesday that at least 12 empty LNG tankers owned or contracted by Qatar Energy were waiting off Qatar. LNG shipments via Hormuz surged in September but remained about 75% below February levels.
