Hurricane Isaias has made landfall in the US state of Florida and is predicted to deliver life-threatening flooding and winds, forcing thousands of people to evacuate.

The storm dropped slightly to a Category 2 hurricane with speeds of 110 mph (175 kph) before ploughing into Florida’s western panhandle Friday evening.

Florida, Alabama and Georgia have all declared states of emergency as meteorologists warned of life-threatening storm surge that may generate up to 9 feet (2.7m) of flooding in some locations.

Isaias will be one of three storm systems impacting North America this weekend. The other two storms will impact Mexico and Southern California in the warm seas of the Pacific Ocean, powered by El-Niño.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered in Florida and Alabama as the storm approached.

Evacuations in Florida include coastal villages that are on the front lines of the severe storm. In a social media post, Florida Senator Rick Scott cautioned citizens in specified regions to evacuate as soon as possible: “DO NOT WAIT! Get out NOW!”

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey issued a mandatory evacuation for all non-residents, tourists and visitors in crucial counties that are projected to be significantly impacted by the storm. Hurricane Isaias marks the first hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season, which had been mostly delayed owing to El Niño conditions in the Pacific.
