Authorities Recover Bodies of Last Two Italian Divers Missing in Maldives
ROME — Rescue teams have recovered the bodies of the final two Italian divers who died in a deep underwater cave in the Maldives, bringing the tragedy’s death toll to five.
The divers went missing on May 14 while exploring caves at a depth of around 60 meters in Vaavu Atoll. One body was found the same day, two more were retrieved Tuesday, and the last two were brought to the surface Wednesday, according to Maldivian officials.
Among the dead was a marine biology professor, her daughter, and two young researchers from the University of Genoa. The university clarified that the dive was not part of an authorized scientific mission.
A Maldivian military diver also died from decompression illness during the search. The dive boat’s operating license has been suspended pending an investigation. Tourists are not permitted to dive deeper than 30 meters in the Maldives.
