Police Launch Investigation Into Arson Attack at Former London Synagogue

London police launched a counterterrorism investigation Tuesday after an arson attack on a former synagogue in east London, adding to a troubling pattern of antisemitic incidents in the capital that has prompted Prime Minister Keir Starmer to declare a “crisis.”

Firefighters responded to the building early Tuesday morning. Although only minor damage was caused to the gates of the former synagogue, initial CCTV footage indicated the fire was deliberately started at approximately 5:10 a.m. The incident is being treated as arson and has been escalated to Counter Terrorism Policing London due to both the nature of the attack and its targeting of a Jewish religious site.

The attack represents the latest in an escalating series of incidents targeting London’s Jewish community. The Golders Green area of north London, home to a large Jewish population, has been particularly affected by recent arson attacks. Additionally, two Jewish men were stabbed and injured on London streets last week in separate incidents.

Prime Minister Starmer convened public figures for urgent discussions about responding to what he characterized as a serious crisis. During the meeting, Starmer specifically raised the possibility of foreign state involvement, stating that counterterrorism investigators are examining “whether a foreign state has been behind some of these incidents.”

Starmer issued a direct warning to Iran and any other potential actors: “Our message to Iran or to any other country that might seek to promote violence, hatred or division in society is that it will not be tolerated.”

The reference to Iran relates to a group called Harakat Ashab Al-Yamin Al-Islamiya, translating to “The Islamic Movement of the Right Hand.” This relatively obscure organization is believed to be linked to Iran and has previously claimed responsibility for arson and other attacks targeting Jewish facilities in Britain and other European countries.

The escalation in antisemitic violence has created urgent concerns about community safety and the security of Jewish institutions across London. The pattern of incidents—combining arson attacks, stabbings, and now a counterterrorism investigation potentially implicating a foreign state—represents an unprecedented threat level to the Jewish community in the capital.

Police continue investigating the Tuesday morning incident while pursuing broader inquiries into the series of attacks. The counterterrorism classification indicates law enforcement believes these may not be isolated incidents but part of a coordinated campaign with potential foreign involvement.

The situation has prompted heightened security measures at Jewish institutions and intensified government attention to protecting vulnerable communities. Starmer’s public declaration of a crisis and his specific reference to possible Iranian involvement signal that authorities are treating this as a matter of national security concern requiring immediate and sustained response.
