Israeli prison authorities held 9,500 prisoners and detainees as of the first week of March, according to reports from Palestinian prisoners’ organizations. The figure represents a 2.15 percent increase from February.

Vulnerable Populations Imprisoned

Currently, 73 female prisoners are held in Israeli prisons. Additionally, 350 individuals under the age of 18 are detained in the notorious prisons of Megiddo and Ofer.

The detention of juveniles raises concerns about the treatment of minors in military detention facilities. Female prisoners represent a small percentage of the overall prison population but face distinct challenges.

Administrative Detention Dominates

The number of administrative detainees stands at 3,442, the highest percentage among detained populations. Administrative detainees represent 36 percent of all Palestinians in Israeli prisons.

Administrative detainees can be indefinitely held without charge in military detention centers. This legal classification allows indefinite detention based on security assessments rather than formal charges or trials.

Post-October 7 Detentions

There are 1,249 “unlawful combatants” detained from inside the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023. The classification applies to Palestinians detained from Gaza as well as those from Lebanon and Syria.

The detentions extend beyond West Bank and Gaza territories to include individuals from neighboring countries. The broad scope of detention operations reflects expanded military authority during the conflict.

Legal and Human Rights Concerns

Administrative detention without formal charges remains controversial under international law. Human rights organizations have raised concerns about conditions and legal protections for detainees.

The system allows indefinite imprisonment based on perceived security threats. Detainees lack formal trials or specific charges against them in many cases.

Prison Conditions and Documentation

The Megiddo and Ofer prisons have been documented as notorious detention facilities. Conditions and treatment of prisoners remain subjects of ongoing international scrutiny and concern.

Palestinian prisoner organizations continue documenting detention statistics and conditions. These records provide information about the scale and nature of detention operations.
