BP Removes Albert Manifold Amid Conduct and Governance Issues
BP’s board fired Chair Albert Manifold on Tuesday, citing “serious concerns” about his governance standards, oversight, and conduct. The decision came less than eight months after he took the role, marking the latest leadership turmoil at the oil giant.
Sources told Reuters that Manifold had acted aggressively with colleagues, and a whistleblower report helped the board conclude there was a pattern of unacceptable behaviour. Manifold disputed the accusations, saying he was removed “without warning and without explanation.”
The news sent BP’s share price down as much as 10% before it recovered slightly. The company has now seen three chairs and three CEOs in under three years. Ian Tyler, a former Balfour Beatty chief, was named interim chair.
Manifold was appointed in October 2025 to help oversee a strategic revamp, but his removal follows years of management churn, including the firing of former CEO Bernard Looney in 2023 and the abrupt departure of his successor in late 2025.
