Trump Says ‘Time for Ukraine to Find a new President’ as Zelensky rejects Diesel deal

US President Donald Trump has suggested it is “time for Ukraine to get a new president” after Volodymyr Zelensky criticised a US diesel deal with Russia.

Ukraine’s president warned that a new deal to allow millions of tonnes of Russian diesel into the US would provide Moscow money to prolong its war against his nation and described it as a present to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelensky wants to create problems for the world by continuing to authorise attacks on Russian refineries,” Trump told reporters on the White House lawn on Saturday.

Ukraine’s president should “stop” Trump said, before adding Ukraine should “get a new leader who can make a deal”.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has led to the country being under martial law and elections have been suspended.

The US and Israel’s conflict with Iran has greatly restricted the world’s supply of fuel including diesel, effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz through which about a fifth of the world’s oil products pass through.

Russia and Ukraine  a significant producer  have increased their strikes on each other’s energy infrastructure and transit facilities in recent weeks, putting extra pressure on energy markets.“You can do whatever you want with Russia, just don’t hit the refineries, that’s a world problem that’s caused,” Trump continued.

Putin’s envoy Kirill Dmitriev called Trump’s involvement “iconic and historic”, saying that Ukraine needs leadership actually focused on peace”.

On Friday the US president revealed an agreement had been reached with Moscow to defer penalties on Russian diesel exports until 7 April.
