How WhatsApp Usernames Will Change the Way You Connect with Others

PARIS — WhatsApp is rolling out a major privacy update that will allow users to choose unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers when connecting with others on the platform.

The Meta-owned messenger, which claims over three billion users, said the move is “designed to protect the privacy of your phone number.” Under the new system, a user’s phone number will no longer be automatically shared in situations such as being added to large group chats or messaging a person or business for the first time.

There will be no directory or suggestions, so people will need to know your exact username to contact you. The company said it will gradually roll out username reservations worldwide “over the coming months,” notifying users in each country when they open there.

The update addresses a long-standing privacy concern for millions of users who have been reluctant to share their phone numbers with strangers or businesses. The new username system will also allow users to create a more identifiable or branded presence without exposing their phone number.

Meta also said that “creators, small businesses and organizations” will be allowed to claim WhatsApp usernames that they already use on fellow Meta products Facebook or Instagram.

However, as with other social media services, the sheer number of people using WhatsApp means many may not get their first choice of username. The company did not specify exactly when the feature would be available in each country, but said it would notify users as it opens.
