Ikram Abdi Omar Steals the Spotlight as Cannes Film Festival Opens
CANNES — Swedish‑born Somali model Ikram Abdi Omar stole the spotlight on the red carpet at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, wearing an all‑white Stella McCartney Fall 2025 gown paired with Pasquale Bruni jewels.
Several Arab designers also shone during Tuesday’s opening ceremony. German‑American model Heidi Klum chose a whimsical peach and yellow gown by Lebanese couturier Elie Saab. US actress Maika Monroe shimmered in an elegant silver dress by Saudi label Ashi Studio. Miss Universe Lebanon 2023 Maya Aboul Hosn made her Cannes debut in a creation by Lebanese designer Nicolas Jebran.
The festival opened with an honorary Palme d’Or for director Peter Jackson, introduced by Elijah Wood. Jane Fonda and Gong Li officially launched the event, with Fonda declaring, “Cinema has always been an act of resistance.” Jury president Park Chan‑wook noted that politics and cinema go hand in hand.
