PARIS – Lionel Jospin, the Socialist Party leader who served as French Prime Minister during a period of political cohabitation with center-right President Jacques Chirac, has died at age 88, broadcaster BFM reported.

Jospin led the government from 1997 to 2002, a five-year tenure during which France was governed by a president and prime minister from opposing political camps. This arrangement, known in French politics as “cohabitation,” required both leaders to govern cooperatively despite their ideological differences.

The Socialist politician’s time as prime minister coincided with France’s preparation for the eurozone currency transition and significant economic reforms. His tenure represented one of France’s last Socialist-led governments before a rightward political shift in the early 2000s.

Jospin’s political career extended beyond his years as prime minister. He had served as Socialist Party first secretary and later as a presidential candidate, shaping French Socialist ideology during a period of significant European integration and economic change.

The cohabitation period under Chirac and Jospin demonstrated French constitutional flexibility, allowing governments led by opposing parties to function together. The arrangement occurred when parliamentary and presidential elections produced different electoral outcomes, requiring compromise across party lines.

Jospin’s passing marks the end of a significant era in French political history. He represented the Socialist Party during a transformative period in French and European politics, navigating budget constraints, labor reforms, and the complex transition to a unified European currency while managing a divided government structure.

His death removes one of the prominent figures from late 20th-century French politics, a period defined by both domestic reform efforts and France’s central role in broader European integration and monetary union.
