Trump Compares Pearl Harbor to Iran Strikes During Meeting with Japan’s Leader

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump drew a controversial parallel Thursday between US military operations against Iran and Japan’s 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, comparing military secrecy while meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in the Oval Office.

When asked why he had not informed allies about his war plans against Iran, Trump responded: “We wanted surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor?”

The remarks caught Takaichi off guard. Seated beside Trump, her eyes widened and she shifted uncomfortably as he invoked the moment that brought America into World War Two. The December 7, 1941 attack on the US naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, killed 2,390 Americans. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called it “a date which will live in infamy,” and the US declared war on Japan the following day.

Trump’s comparison, meant as a defense of his unilateral decision-making on military operations, highlighted his willingness to reference sensitive historical events in casual conversation. The US ultimately defeated Japan in August 1945, days after atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed hundreds of thousands of civilians.

In Tokyo, Japanese citizens offered mixed reactions to Trump’s remarks. Engineer Yuta Nakamura, 33, sympathized with Takaichi’s position. “She was put in a very difficult situation,” he said, noting that her diplomatic composure prevented potential offense to Trump. “Personally, I took President Trump’s remark as just a joke. But because of her position, if she laughed too much, she’d likely face criticism.”

Retiree Tokio Washino expressed unease at the historical reference. “Given the historical context of Japan having done that, and with Donald bringing it up as an example, it makes me feel a bit uneasy as a Japanese citizen.”

The comment underscored tensions within the Trump administration over military decision-making and coordination with allies, particularly regarding the Iran conflict and broader alliance management during the current geopolitical crisis.
