Greenland Political Parties Reject Any Move to Join the US

In a forceful and unified statement, Greenland’s political parties have publicly rejected any notion of coming under U.S. control, responding directly to renewed suggestions from President Donald Trump that Washington could use force to seize the vast, mineral-rich autonomous territory.

The joint declaration, issued late Friday by the leaders of five parties in Greenland’s parliament, leaves no room for ambiguity. “We don’t want to be Americans, we don’t want to be Danish, we want to be Greenlanders,” they stated. “The future of Greenland must be decided by Greenlanders.”

This clear message of self-determination comes after President Trump repeated his aggressive stance, asserting that the United States was “going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not.” He justified the position by citing national security concerns over rising Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic, warning, “We’re not going to have Russia or China occupy Greenland.”

The Greenlandic leaders, however, emphasized that their path must be charted independently. “No other country can meddle in this,” they underscored. “We must decide our country’s future ourselves — without pressure to make a hasty decision, without procrastination, and without interference from other countries.”

The situation has sent shockwaves through European capitals and strained the Atlantic alliance. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any U.S. invasion would rupture the foundational trust of NATO and the post-war security structure. The statement from Greenland highlights the delicate position of Denmark, which grants Greenland extensive self-rule but retains responsibility for its defense and foreign affairs.

Beyond geopolitics, global interest in Greenland is driven by its vast untapped natural resources, including rare earth minerals and potential oil and gas reserves. This economic potential has placed the island firmly in the spotlight of great power competition.

Despite the escalating rhetoric, U.S. military officials have sought to project calm. General Alexus Grynkewich, head of NATO forces in Europe, stated that the alliance is far from a crisis and remains ready to defend all member territory. Diplomacy is also in motion, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio scheduled to meet with Danish and Greenlandic representatives next week.

The unified voice from Nuuk signals that the people of Greenland are not passive spectators in this international dispute. They are asserting their right to determine their own destiny, firmly rejecting the idea that their homeland is a commodity to be bought or a strategic prize to be taken by force. As global powers maneuver in the melting Arctic, Greenland itself has drawn a line, choosing identity and self-determination over becoming a pawn in a new cold war.
