New North Korean Plant Raises Concerns Over Nuclear Weapons Expansion
SEOUL — North Korea has revealed a new facility for producing weapons‑grade nuclear fuel, with leader Kim Jong Un announcing plans to bolster the country’s nuclear forces “at an exponential rate,” state media reported Thursday.
The Korean Central News Agency said the facility uses “more sophisticated technology” but did not disclose its location or when operations began. Photos showed a large hall lined with centrifuges used to enrich uranium for nuclear bombs.
Kim claimed that North Korea’s production capacity for weapons‑grade nuclear materials has more than doubled compared to five years ago. He said the urgency of strengthening the nuclear deterrent has grown due to what he called “the most ferocious enemies” — an apparent reference to the United States and South Korea.
South Korea’s military assessed the site as a uranium enrichment plant and said it was closely coordinating with the US to monitor North Korean activities.
The disclosure follows a similar unveiling in September 2024 and comes as North Korea has expanded its arsenal of nuclear‑capable missiles. Some experts estimate the country now has more than 100 warheads.
