French Government Sends A400M Plane to Support Firefighting Efforts

PARIS — Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has ordered the armed forces to deploy an A400M military transport aircraft as early as Saturday to assist in firefighting efforts in southwestern France, his office announced.

The aircraft will be equipped with a dispensing kit capable of releasing 20 tons of fire retardant, matching the capacity of two Dash firefighting planes. The deployment had previously been scheduled for the end of the month due to preparations and testing, but was moved forward as fires continue to rage across the region.

The move comes as firefighters across southern Europe battle blazes fueled by scorching temperatures and strong winds. The A400M’s deployment is expected to provide additional aerial support to ground crews working to contain the flames.
