Indonesian police have arrested a 53‑year‑old Australian woman found with 59 milliliters of vape liquid containing cannabis on the resort island of Lombok.

The woman, who said she used the liquid to relieve knee pain and depression, was arrested last month at her rented house after police discovered she had received a delivery of cannabis oil.

Narcotics officer I Nyoman Diana Mahardika told AFP on Thursday that the case would be investigated as a crime, despite the claimed medical use. “She must comply with the laws and regulations in force in our country,” he said.

Under Indonesia’s strict anti‑drug laws, possession of cannabis carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of two billion rupiah ($111,000).

Indonesia has some of the world’s toughest drug laws, including the death penalty for traffickers, though a moratorium on executions has been in place for several years.
