Saudi Arabia has blamed Yemen’s Houthi rebels for killing at least 12 people and wounded 300 in a third attack on Riyadh’s international airport this week.

On Saturday, the victims included four Saudis, two Bangladeshi and one each from the United States, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan and Egypt, the Saudi civil aviation authority said.

It comes as the battle in Yemen escalates with the Houthis battling forces associated with the internationally recognised government for control of the country. Saudi Arabia is carrying out an air campaign against the Houthis in support of the Yemeni government’s combat struggle against the Iran-backed militia.

President Donald Trump called the incident “terrible” and said he would be calling shortly with the de-facto leader of Saudi Arabia, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He also indicated he was considering whether the US should join the war against the Houthi rebels.

We could. We’re going to look at it. ‘We have just heard about the recent attack therefore we will decide. “We’re going to move very fast,” he remarked.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted in the meanwhile that the Houthi attack killed an American and urged for an end to “these reprehensible attacks”.

We stand with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its people and extend our condolences to the victims and their families,” he tweeted on X.The UN special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, described the deadly strikes on civilian airports in Saudi Arabia as “a grave escalation”.

These actions represent a serious threat to regional security, perpetuate cycles of violence and further complicate efforts to achieve peace for Yemen,” he said in a statement.
