Officials in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, say at least 12 people have been killed and 309 others injured in an attack on an airport.

The victims were four Saudis, two Bangladeshis and one each from the United States, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan and Egypt, the Saudi civil aviation authority said. King Khalid International Airport has ceased operations.

Saudi-led military coalition blamed Yemen’s Houthis for the bombing and branded it a “war crime,” promising a reaction later.

The Houthis did not comment on the new incident but said they carried out other strikes at the airport on Thursday that killed three people and damaged a jet.

Fighting has flared anew between Yemen’s Saudi-backed government forces and the Houthis who dominate the country. Saturday’s bombing was the kingdom’s deadliest since May 2015.

The Saudi-led coalition stated on Saturday that a projectile also landed near King Fahd International Airport in Dammam in eastern Saudi Arabia, in addition to the strikes on Riyadh’s airport.

The strikes came a day after authorities reported three Saudis including a pilot were killed in two raids on the airport by the Iran-backed Houthis. Three more persons were murdered in Houthi attacks on two Saudi airports on 6 and 7 October.

Some of the injured were in “critical condition,” the Saudi civil aviation authority said in a statement on Saturday.
