Why India Increased Passport Issuance and Renewal Fees from July 1
NEW DELHI — The Indian government has raised passport fees for the first time in 14 years, with new rates taking effect from July 1, 2026, just a day after clarifying that the passport is solely a travel document and not proof of citizenship.
Under the revised structure, a fresh or reissued 36‑page passport under the normal scheme will cost Rs2,500, up from Rs1,500, while the Tatkaal (expedited) fee rises to Rs5,000 from Rs3,500. For Non‑Resident Indians, fees increase to $125 (normal) and $250 (Tatkaal), compared to the current $75 and $225 respectively.
60‑Page Passports
A 60‑page passport now costs Rs3,500 (normal) and Rs6,000 (Tatkaal), up from Rs2,000 and Rs4,000. NRIs will pay $175 (normal) and $300 (Tatkaal), versus $100 and $250 previously.
Lost or Damaged Passports
For reissuing a lost or damaged 36‑page passport, the normal fee rises to Rs5,000 from Rs3,000, and Tatkaal to Rs7,500 from Rs5,000. NRIs pay $250 (normal) and $375 (Tatkaal). For 60‑page reissues, fees increase to Rs6,000 (normal) and Rs8,500 (Tatkaal), with NRIs paying $300 and $425 respectively.
Minors’ Passports
Applicants under 18 will pay Rs1,750 (normal) and Rs4,250 (Tatkaal) for a 36‑page passport, up from Rs1,000 and Rs3,000. For lost or damaged minors’ passports, fees rise to Rs4,250 (normal) and Rs6,750 (Tatkaal).
Other Documents and Discounts
Police Clearance Certificates, Surrender Certificates, and other related documents now cost Rs750 ($40 for NRIs). A 10 percent discount applies to fresh passport applications (not re‑issue) for children up to age 8 and seniors above 60.
The government said the revision reflects increased operational costs and improved service delivery. Travelers are advised to factor the new fees when planning applications, with the Tatkaal option remaining available for urgent needs.
