Kyiv Blackouts Deepen as Strike on Ukrainian Public Buses Kills 30
KYIV: A Russian guided bomb exploded near public buses carrying passengers in eastern Ukraine, killing 30 people, police said Thursday, in a spate of strikes that also worsened power outages in the capital.
The morning incident took place at a bus stop in the war-torn city of Kramatorsk in Ukraine’s Donetsk province, leading authorities to halt public transport in the area.
There is no question that Russia cynically strikes civilians, said Oleksandr Honcharenko, chief of the city’s military administration. He added rescue work had been hampered by additional Russian strikes with small drones.
Russia and Ukraine are fighting a long-range aerial war more than 4 1/2 years after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion, while their soldiers are mostly stuck in a stalemate on the front line. In recent weeks, Russia has expanded its aircraft bombardments, targeting infrastructure supporting Ukraine’s war-weary economy and ramping up pressure on the country as it readies for winter. Its recent targets have included energy systems, critical industries, railroads, post offices, shopping centers, telecom networks, petrol stations and grain exports.
The Thursday attack came a day after a Russian missile blast in the northern Ukrainian village of Pryluky that killed 22 people, including five children. Rescuers searched through the ruins of a residential structure. At least 54 persons were injured. Some of the survivors remained in the badly damaged flats because they had nowhere else to go.
Ukraine calls for additional defence aid from NATO Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Pryluky on Thursday with British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband. Zelensky said Russia will probably step up daily missile and drone operations as winter approaches.
