Jaguar Launches New Electric Car Following Woke Taunts
Jaguar has launched its new electric car two years after its controversial rebranding triggered a backlash with the corporation accused of going ‘woke’.
The Type 01 is a gamble for parent firm JLR, which has spent billions revamping Jaguar and is facing mixed opinions over the new car’s design and the business’s all-electric ambition.
The car itself is an impressive four-door ‘Grand Tourer’, with a tall bonnet that purposely harkens back to Jaguar’s iconic 1960s E-Type.
But it comes at a high price, starting at £130,000 in the UK and $130,500 in the US.
The new model has powerful electric motors that produce around 1000 horsepower and can go from 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds. JLR believes it can manage up to 320 miles at “sustained highway speed”.
The business calls it the “most technically advanced, powerful and aerodynamic Jaguar ever built. Critics said JLR was abandoning its past for the sake of being ‘woke’. Even the shade chosen for the unveiling was ridiculed as “Barbie pink”, as culture wars raged around it.
Surprised with the reception, JLR. Jaguar’s decision to become a luxury electric brand was part of a bigger plan announced by the firm in early 2023, pledging to spend £15bn on new vehicles and technology.
But the Tuesday reveal of the Type 01 drew mixed comments on social media.“Looks like a cyber truck and a Bentley continental had an illegitimate child,” Facebook user Ken Katch commented, referring to the Tesla pick-up, noted for its contentious design.
