UAE’s Etisalat Introduces World-First 5.5G Innovation to Increase Smartphone Upload Rates
The technology, known as 2×2 uplink MIMO with carrier aggregation, is available on etisalat UAE’s 5.5G network only. It’s designed to allow consumers upload high resolution photographs, share films, send massive files and use AI-driven applications at speed.
The technique works by letting smartphones send two data streams at once, with carrier aggregation combining capacity across different frequency bands.
Mobile experiences are evolving. Smartphones are not just consuming material, they are creating, sharing and more and more transmitting richer data to AI and cloud applications in real-time. That changes what we need from the network. “By bringing this capability to smartphones globally for the first time, we are expanding upload capacity where it matters and ensuring our 5.5G network is ready for how customers will use their devices next,” said Marwan Bin Shakar, Chief Technology Officer, etisalat UAE.
The debut comes as smartphones become increasingly dependent on cloud services and AI capabilities that require users to provide device data, rather than just download it.
For instance, when a user asks an AI assistant to analyse an image, respond to what their camera sees, or analyse a document, they must submit the content first. Faster upload rates mean that those interactions are more responsive since the information gets to the cloud more rapidly.
