Russia Escalates Cyber-Physical Pressure on Ukraine’s Digital Infrastructure
As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues, Russia has launched fresh attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, including data centres and telecommunications in Kyiv, affecting internet facilities for almost 100000 households.
This attempt is aimed at weakening the digital backbone of the economy, disrupting several businesses, banks, payment platforms, and services heavily dependent on the telecommunications network and data centres.
According to Ukraine’s digital transformation ministry, about 10,000 households in Kyiv and the surrounding region suffered temporary outages after Russia hit data centres on Wednesday and Thursday.
Following this, another drone strike on Friday damaged the offices of Datagroup, known to be one of Ukraine’s largest telecommunications companies. The strike caused severe damage to the company’s infrastructure, with reports of 4 people injured. Despite the damage, the company stated its services will remain active through backup sites.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, wrote on X, “Russia has targeted major Ukrainian data centres, seeking to disrupt the flow of information.”
Zelenskyy Says Russia Is Targeting Everyday Life
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia’s fresh attacks are targeting civilian lives. He states Russia is expanding the scope of its attacks to include data centres, internet providers and businesses that support Ukraine’s digital infrastructure.
He said, “All this affects people’s ability to stay connected, study, work.”
Russia’s Ministry of Defence confirmed the attack on the data centre in Kyiv. Defending the attack, he said that the facility was being used to support Ukraine’s military operations.
The Russian Defence Ministry also talked about the targets at other data-processing and telecommunication centres in Ukraine, including New-Telco, United DC, Kyivstar and Parkovyi.
In a recent post on X, by a popular blogger and former government adviser, “I recommend Kyiv residents gradually prepare for winter … by getting Starlink terminals or other means of maintaining communications.”
He also warned, “The goal of the Russians is not only to strike at the capital’s energy infrastructure but also to destroy all datacentres and internet operators.”
Recent damage to datacentres has added another challenge for Ukraine to contend with as it continues to deal with the ongoing war.
