Aleppo Munitions Depot Explosions Leave Four Injured in Northern Syria
At least four people were injured after a series of explosions struck an army site near the town of Al-Eis in northern Syria early Monday, according to state media outlet SANA.
The cause of the explosions was not immediately clear. SANA later reported, citing the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management, that one civilian was injured by shrapnel from a blast at an ammunition depot, while two others experienced temporary breathing difficulties and a fourth was hurt in a traffic accident while trying to flee the area. Civil defense teams transported the injured and evacuated three families from the site, and remained on high alert given the continued explosions.
Aleppo’s civil defense operations chief, Faisal Mohammad Ali, said in comments carried by the state-run Al-Ikhbariya channel that the ongoing blasts had initially prevented emergency crews from reaching the site quickly. One resident of Aleppo’s Hamdaniyeh neighborhood told AFP they heard a huge explosion and, upon going up to the roof, saw large flames in the distance.
Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Gharib urged residents to stay in their homes for the time being, saying hospitals, ambulance crews and emergency teams are on full alert. Roads leading to the site were closed to ensure the safety of civilians, according to Aleppo’s Internal Security Command, as quoted by SANA.
Similar blasts have occurred periodically in Syria as the country continues recovering from more than a decade of civil war following the toppling of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in late 2024. An explosion of unknown origin killed 11 people at a military site in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor on Friday. Earlier this month, an explosion at a Defense Ministry weapons depot in Syria’s northwest Idlib province killed 14 people and injured 11, and just over a week before that, five people were killed in the same area when a vehicle carrying munitions exploded.
