Pilots Injured in Amazon Cargo Plane Crash Released From Hospital
The two pilots of an Amazon cargo plane that overran the runway while landing at Miami International Airport, striking a van and killing five people, have been released from the hospital, officials said Tuesday.
Three people remain hospitalized following Sunday’s accident, two in critical condition and one in stable condition, Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said at a news conference. Cordero-Stutz said the National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the crash itself, while the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is conducting a separate inquiry into the deaths that occurred on the ground.
NTSB Chief Jennifer Homendy said officials are currently reviewing flight data and cockpit voice recordings from the aircraft. Flight data released by investigators Tuesday suggests the plane attempted to abort its landing before tearing through a perimeter fence and colliding with two vehicles.
NTSB investigator Chihoon Shin said the plane attempted to perform a “go-around,” a routine safety maneuver in which a pilot halts a landing attempt and returns to the air to make another approach, before ultimately abandoning that effort. Shin said the pilots then applied the brakes in an attempt to stop the plane and reduced the throttle to idle.
Homendy said the pilot and co-pilot, aged 55 and 37, are scheduled to be interviewed Wednesday. According to Homendy, the plane came to a stop roughly 1,300 feet past the end of the paved runway surface. The five people who died were inside a cleaning-services van at the time of the collision.
The crash caused hundreds of flight delays at Florida’s busiest airport. Homendy said the aircraft was a Boeing 767-300 built in 1994, operated by 21 Air LLC, a Miami-based company contracted to Amazon. The plane was on its third flight of the day, arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the time of the accident.
