Canada in Shock as PM Carney Denounces Mosque Shooting
MONTREAL — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday condemned a shooting at an Islamic center in Winnipeg as an “appalling” act of Islamophobia.
No one was injured in the Wednesday night shooting at the Rahma Islamic Centre in the capital of Manitoba province. Carney said on X the violent act has no place in Canada and that law enforcement has his full support as they work to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims said individuals shot at the center from a vehicle and then attacked it with a blunt weapon while community members were gathered inside. The council described the incident as another example of what it called “literal daily occurrences” of similar incidents across the country, warning that Islamophobic violence is reaching a record rate and becoming a new norm in Canada.
Winnipeg police, leading the investigation, have not yet identified any suspects or made any arrests.
