Settlers masked have attacked Palestinians and set fire to cars and olive trees during the annual olive harvest in the occupied West Bank.

One of numerous attacks witnessed by a BBC team took place in farmland near the Palestinian hamlet of Abu Falah. A local official stated 12 Palestinians had been hurt in the attacks, including four dual Palestinian American citizens. A foreign journalist was among those injured.

As we drove into the area early that morning, the first traces of the violence were there: a convoy of cars transporting wounded Palestinian olive growers speeding over the small stony road, piled high with olive picking gear, and smoke rising from a number of fires nearby.

Majdi Fheed, his face covered in blood, looked out from the backseat of an automobile. We were gathering our olive trees and around 15 Jewish guys started hitting us with firearms, with rocks, with special weapons. They beat me on my head [and] my neck – look, I am bleeding

Majdi, an American citizen, was attacked by settlers with nail-studded sticks and needed treatment for significant cuts on his head, Yaser Alkam, a council member from the nearby town of Tormus Aya, informed me. Also, his old mother got harmed.

Another man taking the injured to hospital told us that settlers had assaulted them with sticks while they were harvesting their olives, and had set fire to three cars, including one of his own. All Israeli settlements are unlawful under international law. Outposts, tiny hilltop encampments, are also illegal under Israeli law, although many nonetheless enjoy state protection.”This is a hot spot; there are seven villages around here,” Amin Khalil told me. So this year all the locals got together. When there are only a few people working alone at the edge of the settlement, the settlers assault. So today all the families are working as a team.
