French Finance Minister tells UK to Come all the Way Back to the EU
French finance minister Roland Lescure has called on Britain to “come all the way” back into the EU after Prime Minister Andy Burnham said a second Brexit referendum was possible in a future Labour election manifesto.
Being in the bloc poses some difficulties, Lescure said, but it will allow members to better face the challenges the world is facing.
Burnham said last week the UK should “consider the options ranging from staying as we are, to rejoining the customs union or single market, or going “all the way”.
Asked about the PM’s comments, Lescure told the BBC: “The British people decided, and that’s obviously their 100% right, and if they are willing to come back, they will have to decide.”
He said: “But what I can say to them is: come back, anytime. Burnham recently cautioned that planned EU rules to aid European manufacturers will harm the UK.
The prime minister expressed concerns about the proposed Made in Europe scheme’s effect on British industry and supply chains.
The proposals, aimed at shielding EU industry from Chinese competitors, would give companies based inside the bloc preference for public contracts and subsidies. The EU car industry has said the UK should be included to avoid disruption to its own supply chains.
