Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth praised the crew of the USS Abraham Lincoln on Wednesday after the ship returned from a lengthy, arduous Iran war mission in which many service members in the carrier strike group attempted suicide, according to AFP.

The large nuclear-powered battleship left California in November 2025 for deployment in the South China Sea and was redirected to the Middle East before US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran began in late February. It remained at sea until an early September port visit in Thailand. No other carrier strike group has ever done what the USS Abraham Lincoln did, Hegseth declared to service members on the ship while at sea in the Pacific.”Ten thousand sorties, 23,000 combat flight hours, nearly 4,000 combat sorties, he remarked, later announcing the award of a presidential unit recognition to the strike group for “extraordinary heroism against enemy forces.

However, the lengthy deployment took its toll on US military personnel aboard the Lincoln and accompanying vessels. In August, military families and lawmakers raised concerns about suspected suicide attempts and food shortages aboard the carrier.

President Donald Trump denied the charges at the time but Hegseth believed the issue had been misrepresented.

On Wednesday, Hegseth criticised news coverage of the carrier, stating, There were a few folks in the media who tried to turn the USS Abraham Lincoln into some sort of symbol a symbol of dysfunction, a symbol of low morale, or a symbol of a failed mission.
