Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye Consider Defense Cooperation After Attacks
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan met with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan as part of ongoing efforts tied to the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement.
The three ministers reviewed progress on establishing the agreement’s General Secretariat, committees and working groups, as well as preparations for those bodies to begin operating. They strongly condemned recent attacks targeting Mecca and civilian and economic facilities inside Saudi Arabia, praising the vigilance of the Saudi armed forces and their ability to protect the Kingdom’s security, while affirming Saudi Arabia’s right to take whatever measures it deems necessary to defend itself under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
The ministers also discussed arrangements for an urgent meeting between the chiefs of staff of the three countries to explore ways to support Saudi Arabia under the terms of the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement, which holds that an act of aggression against one member constitutes an attack against all parties.
Beyond the immediate security response, the ministers addressed the broader regional situation, emphasizing the importance of respecting international law, maintaining good neighborly relations, upholding state sovereignty, and avoiding interference in internal affairs. They also underscored the need to protect the security and freedom of maritime navigation.
The three officials reaffirmed their shared commitment to working toward sustainable peace and stability in the region, supporting efforts to ease tensions and pursuing peaceful solutions to the crises currently unfolding across the Middle East.
