Egypt Earthquake Today: Magnitude 5.5 Tremor Recorded Near Suez

CAIRO — A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck eastern Egypt early Monday, shaking a wide area from Cairo to El-Arish near the Gaza border, authorities said.

The tremor hit about 40 kilometers north of Suez at 3:00 a.m., according to Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics. The US Geological Survey recorded the quake at magnitude 5.0.

Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar activated emergency response plans and ordered ambulance services to be at maximum readiness. There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, according to the health ministry and the Egyptian Red Crescent.

The Red Crescent urged residents to avoid old or dilapidated buildings, which are common in some Cairo neighborhoods.

Strong earthquakes are rare in Egypt. The deadliest in modern history struck in October 1992, when a 5.8-magnitude quake shook the capital, killing more than 500 people and displacing thousands.
