Houthi and Iranian Blackmail Attacks Prompt Bahrain to Call for Strong UN Intervention
NEW YORK CITY — Bahrain’s ambassador to the UN, Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, told the Security Council on Tuesday that Houthi attacks threatening navigation in the Bab Al-Mandab Strait and the Red Sea, along with Iranian strikes affecting freedom of passage through the Strait of Hormuz, amount to “a form of blackmail” demanding a firm response.
“All of these attacks require the council to take a very firm stance to ensure navigational security and freedom of passage in maritime corridors,” he said.
His remarks came as the council adopted Resolution 2826, extending for six months a mandate for the UN secretary-general to report on Houthi attacks against Red Sea shipping. Alrowaiei noted that the reports document repeated violations of Security Council resolutions by the Houthis.
The ambassador also condemned Houthi missile and drone attacks on Abha International Airport in Saudi Arabia on Monday, describing them as “a dangerous escalation” and “a flagrant violation of international law.” He commended Saudi air defense systems for intercepting the strikes and reaffirmed Bahrain’s full support for the Kingdom in safeguarding its sovereignty and security.
The Houthi threats violate Resolution 2722, which demands an immediate halt to all attacks undermining navigational rights and regional peace, Alrowaiei said, adding that they also breach international law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
