Rima Mismar Highlights Emerging Talent Ahead of New Training Program
RIYADH — Rima Mismar, executive director of the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, believes a new chapter is beginning for women filmmakers in the region. Her optimism comes as AFAC launches the third “Women in Film: Training Through Practice” event, run in partnership with Netflix.
An open call, closing July 17, invites Arab women aged 23 to 30 living in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, or the UAE to apply for a hybrid residency later this year in either the UAE or Saudi Arabia. Participants can choose from multiple tracks, gaining hands‑on experience through workshops and mentorship.
“There is no shortage of creative voices or compelling stories in the Arab world,” Mismar told Arab News. “What many young filmmakers need now is sustained access to practical experience, mentorship, and collaborative environments.”
Unlike previous editions that focused on story development, this year’s program emphasizes practical training across filmmaking departments. Mismar noted that while “meaningful progress” has been made, women still face uneven opportunities, especially outside major industry hubs.
The program has already produced results. Jordanian filmmaker Aysha Shahaltough’s “Cleanse the Streets,” developed through a previous edition, was selected for the Short Shorts Film Festival in Japan. “These stories help shape how we understand ourselves and how we are understood by others,” Mismar said.
