Heavy Israeli Strikes Rock Beirut Neighborhoods, Apartment Block Damaged
BEIRUT – Israeli airstrikes struck three neighborhoods in Beirut early Tuesday, hitting residential areas and an apartment building, Lebanese state media reported. An Ethiopian woman was wounded in the strikes.
The attacks targeted the Kafaat and Haret Hreik neighborhoods, with a separate airstrike on a residential building in the Doha Aramoun area. Israel confirmed it carried out the operations, stating it was targeting Hezbollah infrastructure.
The strikes mark the latest escalation in fighting that began March 2 when Hezbollah attacked Israel in response to the killing of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Israel has responded with extensive air raids and ground operations in border areas.
The humanitarian toll continues to mount. Israeli strikes have killed 886 people, including 67 women and 111 children, since fighting resumed, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. An additional 2,141 people have been wounded.
More than one million people have been displaced since March 2, with over 130,000 sheltering in more than 600 collective shelters across the country. Israel has issued evacuation warnings for southern Lebanon extending more than 40 kilometers from its border.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that displaced Lebanese should not return home in areas south of the Litani region “until the safety of residents in the north (of Israel) is guaranteed.”
