Zelenskyy says Russia launches three Cluster-Warhead Ballistic Missiles Toward Kyiv
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated Thursday that Russian forces fired three ballistic missiles overnight against Kyiv with cluster warheads designed to maximize deaths throughout urban neighborhoods.
The warhead blows up above ground level, and it is designed precisely to cause maximum damage to people and equipment in an area 400 by 400 metres,” Beskrestnov said, adding that its 58 bomblets burst in the air.
Zelenskyy accused Moscow of purposefully targeting civilians in Kyiv’s historic center, saying the choice of both weapon and place was premeditated. “This is another exceptionally revealing hit — revealing because it was no accident. ‘The choice of weapon was purposeful, the choice of target area was deliberate and so was the aim to inflict as much loss and damage on civilians as possible,’ he said. There was no military target anywhere nearby, not even theoretically; the weapon was designed to cause massive destruction.”
The strike was part of a massive Russian aerial assault on Ukraine’s capital and the surrounding territory overnight October 21-22.
Zelenskyy said at least two people were killed and 34 injured, including five children, in the impacted areas. The assault was in waves, with ballistic missiles and drones targeting residential districts, transport infrastructure and medical infrastructure around the capital.
Kyiv authorities reported damage in the Holosiivskyi, Obolonskyi, Pecherskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Dniprovskyi districts.
