Heavy Rains Trigger Widespread Flooding in Western Libya

Torrential rainfall has hit parts of western Libya, triggering flash floods, cutting off roads and causing power outages in the affected region. Authorities have asked residents to remain alert amid continued thunderstorms and the risk of further flooding.

Since Thursday night, Mizdah and surrounding areas have dealt with heavy rainfall, overflowing valleys, and rising floodwater, prompting authorities to step up rescue and evacuation operations for those affected or stranded by flooding.

The Government of National Unity announced that Air Ambulance services were tasked with evacuating flood victims in the Municipality of AI-Shaqiqah and transporting those needing medical attention to specialised healthcare facilities.

Prime Minister Orders Immediate Emergency Response

Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah directed authorities to immediately mobilise resources in the affected areas, deploy special field teams and take charge of shelter and medical management.

Ahmed al-Sid, the mayor of the city of Nasmah, located roughly 150 kilometres south of Tripoli, has declared the municipality a disaster area following severe damage from rain and overflowing dry valleys.

According to a statement made by Dbeibah, he is keeping a close eye on the situation. He also ordered emergency agencies to work on reopening blocked roads, clearing accumulated water and debris, and restoring essential services, including electricity, water and communications.

Several images and videos are circulating on social media where people are seen trapped in vehicles and taking measures to get out of them.

For now, emergency teams remain deployed in the worst-affected areas, while local authorities continue clearing roads, removing accumulated water and monitoring valleys for further flooding.
