Google Plans Direct Reporting of Child Abuse Content to Indian Authorities

Google said Monday it has agreed to report content flagged as child sexual abuse material directly to Indian authorities, departing from the global standard practice of routing such reports through a US-based nonprofit first.

The move follows a similar announcement from Meta last week. According to two Indian government sources cited by Reuters, officials had recently pressed companies including Google and Microsoft to report child abuse material involving India directly, citing concerns that the existing process causes significant delays.

A Google spokesperson said the company invests significantly in efforts to detect, deter, remove and report such material, describing the shift as part of ongoing discussions with the Indian government.

India represents the largest user base for both Meta’s Facebook and Google’s YouTube. Meta’s own policy shift came after weeks of friction with Indian officials, including an apology last month from CEO Mark Zuckerberg over the spread of this kind of content on the company’s platforms.

For years, both Meta and Google have routed these reports through the US-based National Center for Missing Exploited Children, which then relays them to law enforcement in the relevant country. Indian officials have argued that this intermediary step costs valuable time in cases where a child may be in immediate danger, since reports must pass through the nonprofit before reaching domestic police able to act on the ground, according to the Reuters sources.

The broader problem remains substantial. The CyberTipline, operated by that same nonprofit, received more than 21.3 million reports of suspected child exploitation from around the world in 2025. Officials in the US, the European Union and elsewhere have pushed platforms to speed up detection and reporting, though most countries continue to rely on the US nonprofit as the primary channel for these reports.
