Two Polish Airports Shut Down After Russian Attacks Near Ukraine Border
  • PublishedFebruary 7, 2026

Two major airports in southeastern Poland suspended all flight operations on Saturday as a direct precautionary measure following Russian military strikes on nearby Ukrainian territory. The affected airports are in Rzeszow and Lublin, both situated close to the Polish-Ukrainian border.

The Polish Air Navigation Services Agency announced the temporary closure, stating it was necessary “in connection with the need to ensure the possibility of the free operation of military aviation.” This indicates that airspace was prioritized for potential defensive or monitoring missions by Polish and likely NATO forces.

A Strategic Hub at a Moment of Tension

The closure carries significant strategic weight. Rzeszow is not just any regional airport; it has served as NATO’s primary logistical hub for channeling military aid and supplies into Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Its operations are critical to the alliance’s support for Kyiv.

The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces clarified that military aircraft had begun operating in Polish airspace due to the Russian strikes across the border. These actions were described as “preventive” and aimed at “securing and protecting the airspace, particularly in areas adjacent to the threatened regions.”

A Pattern of Heightened Alert

This is not the first such incident. Both airports underwent similar temporary suspensions last month, though authorities at the time characterized the military activity as routine. Saturday’s closure, however, was explicitly linked to active Russian attacks, signaling a heightened state of alert.

Flight tracking services and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the halt, with the FAA citing “military activity related to ensuring state security.” The presence of NATO aircraft in the area was also noted.

The precautionary shutdown underscores the tangible ripple effects of the war in Ukraine on neighboring NATO territory. While Polish authorities emphasized the move was defensive and preventative, it highlights the persistent risk of escalation and the constant, vigilant measures required to maintain security along the alliance’s eastern flank. For now, the skies over Rzeszow and Lublin are quiet for civilian travel, reserved for the aircraft safeguarding the border.
