Saudi Aramco Achieves Major Milestone in Gas Production Expansion Plan
  • PublishedFebruary 27, 2026

Saudi Aramco has announced significant progress in its ambitious gas production expansion program, with production commencing at the Jafurah field—the Middle East’s largest unconventional gas field—and operational activities beginning at the Tanajib Gas Plant, one of the world’s largest gas processing facilities.

The milestones mark a pivotal moment in Aramco’s strategy to increase sales gas production capacity by approximately 80 percent by 2030 compared to 2021 levels, reaching nearly 6 million barrels of oil equivalent per day from total gas and associated liquids production, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

A Strategic Economic Driver

President and CEO Amin Al-Nasser emphasized the significance of the achievements. “We are proud to commence production at the Jafurah field and begin operations at the Tanajib Gas Plant. These are major achievements for Saudi Aramco and the future of energy in the Kingdom. Our ambitious gas program is expected to become a key source of profitability.”

The program is projected to generate additional operating cash flows ranging between $12 billion and $15 billion in 2030, subject to future demand and prices. Beyond financial returns, the expansion supports domestic gas demand, industrialization, and development across key sectors.

Al-Nasser expressed gratitude for leadership support, noting its “profound impact on the company’s achievements and distinguished projects that serve the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.”

Jafurah: A World-Class Resource

The Jafurah field spans 17,000 square kilometers and is estimated to contain 229 trillion standard cubic feet of raw gas and 75 billion barrels of condensates. By 2030, the project aims to produce:

  • 2 billion standard cubic feet per day of sales gas
  • 420 million standard cubic feet per day of ethane
  • Approximately 630,000 barrels per day of gas liquids and condensates

Technology has played a crucial role in unlocking Jafurah’s potential. Since inception, the project has leveraged advanced techniques to reduce drilling and stimulation costs while enhancing well productivity, establishing the field as a global benchmark for unconventional gas development.

Tanajib Gas Plant: Processing Power

The Tanajib Gas Plant represents a key pillar in Aramco’s strategy to increase gas processing capacities and diversify its energy product portfolio. Operations began in December 2025, with raw gas processing capacity expected to reach 2.6 billion standard cubic feet per day in 2026.

The plant processes raw gas associated with crude oil production from the offshore Marjan and Zuluf fields. Its start coincided with the commencement of production from the Marjan field expansion and development program. Distinguished by digital integration and enhanced operational efficiency, Tanajib demonstrates Aramco’s capability to execute complex projects and optimize resource use.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The gas expansion is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities, generating significant added value while strengthening Aramco’s position as a reliable energy provider. The program supports multiple national objectives:

  • Meeting growing domestic demand for natural gas
  • Enhancing supply to national industries
  • Supporting the optimal energy mix for local electricity generation
  • Advancing the Kingdom’s liquid fuel displacement program
  • Contributing to environmental goals, including net-zero emissions by 2060
  • Enhancing energy security
  • Building a more diversified national economy

A Vision Realized

The gas extracted from Jafurah will support Saudi Arabia’s growth targets in energy, artificial intelligence, major industries, and petrochemicals. It promises a major boost to the Kingdom’s economy and strengthens its position among the world’s top ten gas producers.

Al-Nasser’s words capture the moment’s significance: major achievements for Aramco, for energy in the Kingdom, and for the future. Production has begun. Operations are underway. And Saudi Arabia’s gas ambitions move closer to reality.
