Passenger Ferry Disaster: Seven Dead, Many Missing Off Southern Philippines
- PublishedJanuary 26, 2026
A quiet overnight journey turned into a maritime disaster off the southern Philippines early Monday morning. The passenger ferry MV Trisha Kerstin 3 capsized, leading to a desperate search-and-rescue operation in the waters off Basilan province.
According to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the vessel was carrying 332 passengers and 27 crew. It had departed from Zamboanga and was en route to Jolo in Sulu province when the accident occurred after midnight.
A Desperate Search Amidst the Waves
The immediate aftermath has been one of both rescue and profound loss. Coast Guard officials reported that 215 people have been rescued from the water, but seven fatalities have been confirmed. The scale of the tragedy is still unfolding, with 144 individuals officially listed as missing as search operations continue.
Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman shared stark scenes from the response at Isabela port, showing survivors—some wrapped in thermal blankets—being helped ashore, while others were carried on stretchers, highlighting the human toll of the accident.
A Recurring Maritime Tragedy
This incident casts a painful light on a persistent national challenge. The Philippines, an archipelago of over 7,000 islands, relies heavily on ferries for transportation. Tragically, scores of people lose their lives in similar accidents each year due to a combination of factors, including often-overloaded vessels, severe weather, and a patchy maritime safety record that has long concerned regulators.
An investigation led by the Coast Guard is now underway to determine the exact cause of the capsizing. As search teams scour the sea, the nation holds its breath, hoping for more survivors while mourning those lost in yet another heartbreaking chapter of its difficult relationship with the sea. The community of Basilan and the families of the passengers now face a long and agonizing wait for news.
