The Netherlands has made history. On Monday, February 23, 2026, 38-year-old centrist Rob Jetten was sworn in as the country’s new Prime Minister—becoming both the youngest person to hold the office and the first openly gay leader in the nation’s history.

Jetten’s ascent to power follows a narrow victory in elections held in October 2025, where he defeated the far-right Freedom Party led by controversial politician Geert Wilders. The election was triggered after Wilders’ party withdrew its support from the previous coalition government, which had lasted only 11 months—the most right-wing government in Dutch history.

A Historic Moment

For Jetten, the path to the prime minister’s office represents both personal achievement and broader social progress. At 38, he brings generational change to Dutch leadership. His openness about his sexuality, unremarkable in the Netherlands’s socially liberal context, nonetheless carries symbolic weight as the first openly gay head of government anywhere in the world.

The Netherlands has long been at the forefront of LGBTQ+ rights, becoming the first country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2001. Jetten’s election continues that tradition of leadership, demonstrating that sexual orientation is no barrier to the highest office.

A Narrow Mandate

Jetten’s victory over Wilders was narrow, reflecting a deeply divided electorate. Wilders’ Freedom Party had campaigned on anti-immigration and anti-EU platforms, tapping into anxieties about cultural change and national identity. Jetten’s centrist coalition prevailed by offering an alternative vision—one focused on stability, inclusivity, and continued European integration.

The previous government’s collapse after just 11 months highlighted the fragility of Dutch coalition politics. Jetten’s task now is to build a durable governing coalition capable of addressing the challenges that brought down his predecessor: immigration policy, climate action, housing affordability, and the cost of living.

What It Means

For the Netherlands, Jetten’s premiership represents continuity with the country’s progressive traditions and a repudiation of the far-right surge seen elsewhere in Europe. For the LGBTQ+ community worldwide, his election offers visibility and validation—proof that identity need not limit aspiration.

For Jetten himself, the work begins. History has been made. Now it must be lived, day by day, in the ordinary business of governing a nation.
