PESHAWAR — A suicide bomber driving a vehicle packed with explosives killed at least three women and two children at a house in northwestern Pakistan late Thursday, local authorities said.

The attack occurred in Bannu, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which lies adjacent to the country’s former tribal areas along the Afghan border.

Muhammad Sajjad Khan, a local police official, told AFP on Friday that the bomber appeared to have intended to target a police station but struck a civilian house before reaching it. Four others were injured in the blast.

Bannu assistant commissioner Ikramullah Khan confirmed the death toll.

No group has claimed responsibility so far. However, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, a militant group that has stepped up attacks since the Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021, routinely targets security forces in the region.

Islamabad has accused neighboring Afghanistan of failing to root out militants sheltering on Afghan soil, a charge the Taliban government denies.
