DHAKA: Saudi volunteer doctors treated more than 5,000 men and women in one of Bangladesh’s poorest areas who needed eye surgery and specialised therapy over the past week. The medical campaign was backed by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre and Al-Basar International Foundation, a Saudi-based non-governmental organisation that provides eye healthcare and vision rehabilitation to the most vulnerable and impoverished areas. The foundation provided 5,014 patients with free eye examinations, medical consultations, medicines, and reading glasses.

We did more than 586 cataract surgeries successfully,” Dr. Ahmed Taher Hamid Ali, the foundation’s country director, told Arab News on Sunday. Many people in the Rangpur region still have serious concerns about eye problems, especially cataracts and other age-related vision issues.

The program focused on low-income households to reduce the financial burden of eye care, enabling hundreds of cataract sufferers to regain their sight, return to work, and manage family responsibilities.

Three Saudi volunteer doctors from KSrelief and medical staff from the Rangpur hospital performed the surgeries.

“Their visit demonstrated the importance of humanitarian cooperation and a shared commitment to providing essential eye care to those in need,” said Dr. Ali. The seven-day treatment program was organised last week at the Makka Eye Hospital in Rangpur, a leading and specialised eye care centre in northern Bangladesh run under the supervision of Al-Basar Foundation.
