Elsewedy Electric PSP has announced that its joint venture with the leading international contractor Sinohydro has won the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services contract for the Rabigh 2 Independent Power Plant (IPP) Expansion Project, one of the largest gas-fired combined-cycle projects in the region, with a total value of $2.2 billion.
Elsewedy Electric stated this marks the full-scale implementation of the 2.3 GW facility under the joint venture.
The joint venture will act as the EPC contractor and will be responsible for the plant’s design, engineering, procurement, erection, construction, commissioning, and performance testing, along with all associated civil works and connectivity to the national grid.

The plant will be configured in an SGT6-5000F 2x (3x3x1) arrangement and will consist of six Siemens SGT6-5000F gas turbines and two Siemens SST-5000 steam turbines, supported by a bypass stack and diverter damper for simple cycle operation, six Heat Recovery Steam Generators, a cooling tower and the full complement of mechanical and electrical and instrumentation and control balance of plant systems.
This turn-key scope demonstrates the Joint Venture’s capacity to execute large-scale and complex power infrastructure projects to international standards, leveraging on the Joint Venture’s significant regional execution experience and worldwide engineering and construction expertise.
The Rabigh 2 IPP Expansion Project will provide a large supply of dependable capacity to the national grid, supporting industrial, commercial and residential demand development across the Kingdom, with commercial operation anticipated for May 2029.
